Ashley Speaks: NorthEast United FC v Kerala Blasters FC

Posted on by KBFC Admin Sporthood

Post-Match Press Conference

Kerala Blasters FC suffered a 4-1 loss against NorthEast United FC on Sunday, 18th October 2026, at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, for their second fixture of the MG Indian Super League 2026-27.

NorthEast United FC, building upon their home advantage, dominated over the Blasters for a vast majority of the match and earned three points, courtesy of Alaaeddine Ajaraie (15’, 70’), Antonio Moyano (45+3), and Aman CK (83’). Momo Yansane (60’) scored the solitary goal for the Blasters after taking a shot from distance, off a flick from Luna. NorthEast United, who dealt the later stages of the game professionally, ensured that Blasters did not breach their goal further.

Following the loss, Ashley Westwood spoke on the team’s performance, the prerequisites of a proper preseason and shared his optimism on the upcoming games.

Here is a report of the post-match presser of the match between NorthEast United FC and Kerala Blasters FC.

Thoughts on the game

Speaking after the match, Ashley conceded that the Blasters deserved the defeat following an off-colour performance. However, the manager highlighted the squad’s character in a stronger second-half effort to make it 2-1, maintaining that missed opportunities ultimately cost them a potential comeback.

I think that’s just where we are in our season. Obviously, assembled late, there’s no excuses. We lost. We deserved to lose on the first half’s performance. We had a nice reaction after half-time. We scored the goal to make it 2-1. If we could have got another goal with the chances we created, it would have ended differently. We didn’t deserve to win, but at least we showed some reaction.

On the team’s fitness improvement and preseason

Addressing the squad’s physical conditioning, Ashley admitted that an unsatisfactory preseason had left several players lacking match fitness. He highlighted the vital importance of a thorough preseason campaign, noting that it provides the necessary foundation to test tactical combinations and foster team chemistry. Moving forward, he expressed confidence that the group would learn from these early setbacks, raise their fitness standards, and translate those improvements into positive results.

Coming from a low state of fitness, we’ve got to learn about the players. We’ve got loads of new players. We’ve obviously not practised to find out about the new players. Every game, every training session, certainly in defeats, you learn more and more about your team. You learn more and more about who you need to change or swap or give other chances to other people.

That’s the reason you have pre-season. That’s the reason you have pre-season friendlies, to learn. You can’t expect to bring five new foreigners. That’s including Luna for me. I don’t know, eight, nine new Indians and expect to click your fingers and start straight away. I’ll learn, we’ll get it right, we’ll watch, we’ll analyse, and we’ll improve again from next week.

We’re getting better with our fitness. Lads are lasting 90 minutes, not getting cramps. We’re making different substitutions to try different combinations and solutions and see who’s suited for where.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, Kerala Blasters host Mumbai City FC on October 25 before traveling to face Chennaiyin FC on October 31. Despite the recent setback, Ashley struck an optimistic tone, assuring supporters that a single defeat will not derail their campaign. He insisted that with increased work rate and tactical discipline, the squad has every capability to bounce back in the upcoming fixtures.

Like I say, this is football. You can’t win every game. We’ve got two more games before we have a little bit of a rest so we can do a bit of catch-up fitness-wise. If we go on to win a game and draw, for example, then you’d have to look at that and go eight points from a possible 12 or seven points, whatever it may be. It would be a good return considering what we’ve done. All we’ve got to do is stay in touch. One loss is not going to change our season. We build on it. We don’t be too down. We just work and work harder.

Match Report: NEUFC vs KBFC

Posted on by KBFC Admin Sporthood

Guwahati, 18 October 2026: Kerala Blasters FC succumbed to a 4-1 loss against NorthEast United FC on the 18th October, 2026, at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium. A brace from Alaaeddine Ajaraie and a goal each from Antonio Moyano and Aman CK ensured that the hosts walked away with all three points. Momo Yansane netted the solitary goal for the Blasters.

Following this loss, Blasters have dropped to the sixth position of the MG Indian Super League group table with three points and a goal difference of -1.

NorthEast dominate the proceedings

The game started with the Blasters’ touch, and right from the first whistle, it was NorthEast United FC who started on the front foot, making the best use of their home advantage. They kept the attacking intent high and kept knocking on the Blasters’ door in search of the opener. Their intent was rewarded early as Alaaeddine Ajaraie broke the deadlock in the 15th minute after winning a long ball that broke the Blasters’ defence.

The Blasters gradually caught up with the pace of the game and made their attempts to find the equaliser. Adrian Luna provided a teasing delivery inside the six-yard box off a short corner to Amey, who missed the goal by a whisker. On the other side, the hosts limited the opportunities for the Blasters while continuing to threaten on the counter, where Arsh made multiple key saves which kept the scoreline ticking at 0-1.

However, just as the game was heading towards the break, a defensive error from the Blasters led to NorthEast finding the back of the net for the second time, courtesy of Antonio Moyano, providing the Highlanders a positive end to the half.

Yansane goal falls short for the Blasters

Blasters stepped into the second half with two changes and with an intensified offensive intent. The addition of Korou injected attacking intent into the team and was influential in the final third. This paid dividends in the 60th minute, when Adrian Luna demonstrated his game awareness to flick a ball to Momo Yansane, who converted the swift attacking move with a composed strike into the bottom corner, providing Blasters with the wake-up call.

Blasters looked sharp from then on in the attack, with Freddy knocking on the opponent’s doors with his powerful long-range shots. Luna crafted the offensive initiatives after combining well with Momo and Green in the final third. However, the response from the hosts was immediate as Alaaeddine Ajaraie glided past the defence to slot in a curving ball to the second post to register his brace.

Aman CK scored the fourth for the Highlanders in the 82nd minute, driving the result beyond doubt, and at full time, the hosts walked off with all three points in the bag.

Full Time: NorthEast United FC 4-1 Kerala Blasters FC

The team will travel back to Kochi to face Mumbai City FC for their first home game of the season, scheduled for Sunday, 25th October, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi.

Match Preview: NorthEast United FC vs Kerala Blasters FC

Posted on by KBFC Admin Sporthood

Kerala Blasters FC will face NorthEast United FC on the 18th October, 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, for their second game of the MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season.

The Blasters head into this fixture after a 2-0 win against Inter Kashi, courtesy of captain Vibin Mohanan and debutant Andre Green finding the back of the net to take the Blasters to the top of the league table at the end of Gameweek 1.

Ashley Westwood handed debuts to summer arrivals Andre Green, Nebojša Kosović, James Bolton, Paul Ramfangzauva, Mohammed Sanan, Momo Yansane and Sumit Sharma last game, with English forward Green capping off his club debut with a late stoppage-time goal and Bolton providing the defensive stability to preserve the clean sheet.

Blasters will be looking forward to remaining consistent and extending their winning streak to maintain the early momentum as the league gathers pace. The team heads into Guwahati eyeing all three points after three days of training in Kolkata.

Rival Watch

NorthEast United arrive for this game after a winning start, where they snatched a late 1-0 winner against Mohun Bagan SG.

“We’re expecting them to be the home side, so the team that’s going to try and win the game and go forward. And why not? They’re off the back of a really good result. They’ll be confident, and we just have to make sure that we’re organised and we’re prepared to stand up and be counted and give a good account of ourselves,” said Ashley Westwood.

Under Juan Pedro Benali, NorthEast United rely on quick transitions and high pressing. Jithin MS offers dynamism, while Alaaeddine Ajaraie provides a constant threat in the final third. Gurmeet Singh anchors the backline with crucial shot-stopping, complemented by Asheer Akhtar’s defensive resilience.

In essence, the Highlanders will remain a potent threat capable of hurting opponents if afforded space. The Blasters’ defensive unit is expected to have a busy hour on the pitch, and they must remain alert and organised to ensure the hosts are neutralised, whenever they try to threaten.

Players to Watch Out For

Vibin Mohanan

The local lad, Vibin Mohanan stepped on to the pitch wearing the captain’s armband last game and provided the team with multiple offensive initiatives that kept the opponents on alert. Vibin had the presence of mind to anticipate a cross from the right and broke the deadlock of the game, scoring the first goal for the Blasters in the MG ISL 2026-27.

Korou Singh

Korou returned back to the Blasters’ starting eleven after missing a large part of the previous season, and the 19-year-old showed no signs of missing out for a long period. Korou looked at ease right from the first whistle and was excellent on the flanks, pairing up with Vibin. Korou notably provided a carpet cut-back to Vibin in the 18th minute, which the skipper converted, marking Korou’s 4th assist in Blasters threads.

Freddy Lallawmawma

Freddy was the backbone of the Blasters midfield and put in an energetic performance, driving the team’s play and contributing at both ends of the pitch. In several instances, he ventured into the final third and even tried his luck by taking some shots from distance, piling the pressure upon the opponents and forcing errors from them.

Word from the Boss

“We’ve won, but there are many things to work on. We’re not quite there yet. It’s quite far off where we want to be. We’ve shown good characteristics that we can keep a clean sheet. We can score goals. And that’s all pluses. And, of course, going into the game, people lasting 90 minutes so early on, people getting fitter. So, all good credit and positives that we take from it,” Ashley Westwood, Head Coach.

“We kept a clean sheet, so it was a good start to the season. And we’re trying to improve because new players are coming in, so we’re trying to help each other at the back. Bolton came in, and he’s a great leader at the back, so he’s helping and guiding us. It’s a plus point for all the players playing at the back, learning from him on and off the pitch. And, yes, he’s helping, and we’re just focusing on ourselves, and we’re going to keep a clean sheet again,” said Aiban Dohling.

There was a sense of insistence about the Blasters on Thursday night, an understanding that, even if the rhythm dipped, the result would not.

At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, they found a way.

A 2–1 victory over Odisha FC was ultimately decided deep into stoppage time, when Matías Hernández rose with conviction to meet a corner and guide home the winner. It was the kind of moment that tends to define dressing rooms. Late, decisive, and built on collective persistence.

Kerala began with clarity. Their left side carried intent early on, with Kévin Yoke repeatedly stretching Odisha’s defensive line. The opener reflected that pressure rather than a single moment of brilliance scrappy, reactive, and sharp in execution.

When the ball broke kindly inside the box, Víctor Bertomeu adjusted quickest, showing composure to finish from close range and give the hosts an early advantage.

For a period, it felt like Kerala could take control of the contest. Bertomeu remained involved, testing the goalkeeper again, while Arsh Anwer Shaikh dealt calmly with Odisha’s first real attacking sequence.

But matches at this level rarely stay one-sided. Odisha grew into the game with more assured possession, and their equaliser, finished by Rahim Ali.

The second half demanded a different quality, Resilience. Odisha applied pressure in spells, forcing the Blasters deeper and drawing multiple interventions from Arsh, who was reliable when called upon. In front of him, the defensive unit held its line well, absorbing phases without losing organisation.

Going forward, the Blasters were less expansive but remained purposeful. Yoke continued to dictate transitions, ensuring that even when the game tightened, there was still a route into the final third.

As the clock moved into stoppage time, the game had the feel of a draw. the Blasters, however, continued to commit bodies forward when the opportunity arose.

From a late corner, Ebindas delivered with precision, and Hernández attacked the space decisively his header firm, well-directed, and beyond reach.

There was still time for another moment—Yoke briefly thought he had added a third—but the offside flag curtailed it. Odisha’s final effort drifted wide, and with that, the points were secured.
