THE REWIND: KBFC vs OFC

KBFC defeated Odisha FC by two goals-to-one in the first home match of the season held at Tilak Maidan, Vasco. This victory marked Blasters’ first ever win in ISL season 8. Alvaro Vazquez and Prasanth scored for KBFC and Nikhil Raj found the net for Odisha.

Ivan Vukomanovic named an unchanged eleven for the game. Blasters had a bright start to the game and were keen to attack from the inception itself. An outswing pass from Jessel in the left wing found Luna, who flicked it for Sahal. Sahal picked up the ball and fired it into goal but Kamaljit Singh kept it out. Couple of minutes later, Luna came so close to scoring the opening goal from a free-kick but somehow Kamaljit got a hand to it.

Odisha was out of the game for a while but one attack from them created panic for our defence. Javi was caught in an offside trap and the linesman clearly pointed it out but the main referee asked to continue play which created unnecessary difficulties for us. Few minutes later, Odisha’s left full-back Henry fired a volley but Albino on goal pulled off a flying save. Just before half-time, Jessel very nearly registered an assist to Alvaro, but the Spaniard was unable to get a touch into the skipper’s ball. First half ended in an optimistic way for the Blasters.

The second half kicked off in an intriguing way as Odisha had a bright outlook in the game. Little by little the Blasters got involved in the match. Luna came close to the goal at the 50th minute, but his shot from the right side of the box flew above the crossbar. Ten minutes later Alvaro found his first ISL goal in yellow and gave us the lead. Luna’s flicking pass was perfectly anticipated and controlled by Alvaro without falling into an offside position and he drove the ball into net after beating the goalkeeper beautifully. Gaining confidence from the goal, Alvaro had a couple of on-target shots afterwards but couldn’t increase his goal tally.

Our shot-stopper Albino Gomes received a knock during the game and was replaced with Prabhsukhan Gill who made his debut in ISL for KBFC. The gaffer flurried in some changes and those fresh legs helped us to maintain the rhythm during the last 15 minutes. Prasanth Mohan, who made his 50th Hero ISL appearance today scored the second goal for us. Luna carried the ball all the way from half-line and passed it to Prasanth who was making an off-the-ball run through his right, and our local lad fired it to the net without any hesitation(2-1). We continued to knock on their doors but were unable to surpass Kamaljit. Deep in the injury time Odisha pulled one back through Nikhil Raj but was very late.

Overall, this thumping victory came in as a result of our teamwork and belief. Luna, who was exceptional throughout the game, bagged the well-deserved Hero of the Match Award. Our defence-line was also in good form and the Jeakson-Puitea duo in the midfield controlled the game well. We will work hard to continue this momentum in coming matches and are ready to go against SC East Bengal on 12th of December, 2021.
