The Rewind : ATK Mohun Bagan vs Kerala Blasters FC
The inaugural match of Hero Indian Super League season 8 witnessed ATK Mohun Bagan pull a win over Kerala Blasters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda(4-2). A brace from Hugo Boumous, Roy Krishna’s penalty goal, and Liston Colaco’s curler secured the game for them. Goals from Sahal and Pereyra Diaz reduced the deficit for us.
For the first game, coach Ivan Vukomanovic fielded Blasters in a 4-4-2 formation with our two foreign attackers Diaz and Vazquez pairing up in the front. Jessel Carneiro led the team from behind with Marko Leskovic, Bijoy V, and Harmanjot Khabra joining him in defense. Our homegrown talent Bijoy V made his ISL debut and played the whole game.
The match officially kicked off with ATK Mohun Bagan’s touch and they started to attack from the first moment itself. Our defense tried well to keep them away from scoring. After a series of corner-kicks, Hugo Boumous found the net for ATKMB in the second minute of the game. But after conceding a goal we showed some character and attacked continuously. Following a well-organized attack in the left, Rahul controlled the ball inside their penalty box and gave it to Sahal who trapped it beautifully and fired it into the bottom corner of the net. That was a moment to cherish for Sahal as he became the first Indian goal-scorer of the ISL 8. Within two minutes, ATKMB regained their lead courtesy of Roy Krishna’s spot-kick, which was allowed for a foul from our goalkeeper Albino Gomes. Rahul was replaced with another local lad Prasanth Karuthadathkuni as he received a knock during the game. Hugo Boumous once again found the net for ATKMB before half-time from a lapse in our defense.
The second 45 minutes of the game started with Blasters’ touch. We attacked through both flanks as well as through the center, but they were defensively compact and didn’t provide us with much space. The Kolkata side increased their lead to 3 goals within five minutes of the second half. Liston’s curler to the top of the goal didn’t give a chance to Albino. Following the goal, we made some changes as Ayush Adhikari and Sandeep Singh replaced Alvaro Vazquez and Khabra. Luna occupied a more attacking position after these substitutions and we got the result as well. Luna’s through-pass to Diaz inside the box found him and the Argentine scored our second goal for the day. Some movements from our Bhutanese striker Chencho Gyeltshen who came in as a substitute gave us hopes about a “come-back” but all went in vain. The referee blew the whistle after five minutes of additional time to the second half and the match ended as a tough pill to swallow for us.
Even Though the scoreline is against us, we are confident about getting back into rhythm in the next match. KBFC will take on North East United FC in the coming match, on the 25th of November, 2021 in the same venue.
