THE STOPPAGE TIME HEART-BREAK

Last night, the Tilak Maidan Stadium at Vasco witnessed the clash between SC East Bengal and Kerala Blasters FC. Our boys geared up in our third kit ahead of this away clash.

Our Head Coach Kibu Vicuña adopting confidence from the previous win fielded our boys in 4-4-1-1 formation with Gary Hooper as the secondary striker and Jordan Murray as the target man. Our Goan defender Jessel Carneiro captained the Blasters last night.

Our boys showcased a confident display throughout the match. We pressed the opposition’s defensive line and showcased a high pressing football against the Red & Gold. Our Striker Jordan Murray had a chance to score soon after the start but the shot couldn’t get past their keeper Debjith Majumdar who maintained a good position and thereby avoiding an early lead against them.

Our fans were quick to note the progress of our local lad Sahal Abdul Samad who displayed much leadership quality by taking charge over the midfield in the first part of the game. Even though our Men-in-Yellow pressed hard in the opposition half but couldn’t convert the chances we received in the first half.

Our Aussie Sniper Jordan Murray opened the scoring for our Yellow Army in the 63rd minute by scoring a clinical goal. Albino Gomes assisted the goal with a long ball to Jordan who controlled the ball with his chest, and bundled it into the net giving no chance for the opposition goalkeeper. Our 25-year-old Striker Jordan joins the Golden boot race by getting into the Top 3 with 6 goals from his 11 appearances for the Yellow Army. Our custodian Albino Gomes became just the second goalkeeper and first Indian in the history of Indian Super League to register an assist.

Our boss also assigned our players to tightly mark the much deadly East Bengal forwards and our boys executed the plan very well giving them no space in our defensive third.

The game also witnessed the debut of our new signing Juande who came on as a substitute for our captain Jessel Carneiro, who picked up a slight injury. Juande took up the responsibilities assigned to him and displayed a decent performance in his debut match. Our Coach quickly changed the tactics to a defensive style of play after the 80th minute withdrawing some players and making suitable changes.

But to our dismay, a headed equalizer by Scott Neville from a corner kick in the 94th minute of the game broke the hearts of our Yellow Army and all of us as we deserved all the three points from the superb display our Men-in-Yellow showcased throughout the game. The match ended 1-1 at Full-Time with both the teams sharing the points.

Bagging the Hero Of The Match award, our young midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad had an incredible night yesterday. Our boss spoke about Sahal as he said
“I think Sahal is a very important player for us. Every day he is performing well. He is working hard and we are happy that every day he is playing better. He did well.”

Our Coach Kibu Vicuña shared his thoughts on the attacking side of our team as he said
“Yes, today we had Sahal and Facundo in the starting eleven. We also played with two strikers, Gary Hooper and Jordan Murray. With these four players in attack and with Jessel and Nishu, they are offensive fullbacks. Even though we did not have the ball as we did at the beginning of the season, we are an attacking team now and we are creating more chances.”

Although quite unexpectedly we drew the match, our coach and his boys are confident about our team. Adopting lessons from this match, we’ll come back stronger and hungrier against Bengaluru FC next Wednesday, 20th January 2021.
