Yesterday it was a sluggish game, however, a last minute goal from Jeakson Singh saved the day as we equalized with a goal in extra time winning the Yellow Army a point against SC East Bengal at Bambolim.
Our Head Coach Kibu Vicuna stuck to his traditional formation (4-3-3) against East Bengal. Our Englishmen Hooper led the attacking force from the front, meanwhile, our Zimbabwean defender Costa Nhamoinessu captained the Men-in-Yellow. The first half kicked off and it was a sloppy start for our team, as the boys found it difficult in setting a rhythm in the game. Coach Robbie Fowler fielded his boys in 3-5-2 formation with a compact defense allowing no space for our boys in the opposition half.
Adding to that slow start the visitors took the lead, again from a defensive error from Kone. The pass-by Mohammed Rafique inside our box led to an own goal by Bakary Kone who intend to clear the ball through a sliding tackle making the scorecard 1-0 in favor of East Bengal.
The second half witnessed a tactical change from KBFC as our coach came in with 3 substitutions replacing Rohit Kumar, Seithyasen Singh, and Gary Hooper with Jeakson Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Jordan Murray. Our boys shifted the gear and played with a high backline thus the other half witnessed some promising moves from our youngsters. Coach Robbie Fowler made his boys defend deep and man-mark our players to keep his lead till the last minute. East Bengal parked the bus in their half allowing no space for our boys to score that equalizing goal they were working for.
Sahal had a game to remember as our star midfielder who was back from injury performed exceptionally well throughout the match. In the 70th minute, Sahal broke past the East Bengal defense and gave a headed pass to Aussie striker Jordan Murray but it couldn’t get past the opposition goalkeeper Debjith Majumder who denied us a sure goal with an exceptional save.
Despite what the score was, our lads were showering fireballs inside the opposition box in the extra minutes of the second half. Finally, the dying minutes of the game witnessed an inch-perfect cross from Sahal which was headed into the net by our young midfielder Jeakson Singh which almost resembled that famous header he scored for the National team in the U-17 World Cup. The late goal gave our Yellow Army the much-needed equalizer thus denying 3 points to the opposition.
We clearly know that this was not the expected result we desired for and neither we played for a draw. Analyzing the mistakes on this match and looking on to more options as we go on, we promise to come back stronger against Hyderabad next Sunday in our last match of the year.
