Wednesdayy , 3 Feb, 2021, GMC Bambolim

In the reverse fixture at the GMC Stadium, Kerala Blasters FC locked horns with the current table-toppers Mumbai City FC. The hard fought 90 minutes resulted in a 2-1 win in favor of the Islanders.

Our Head Coach Kibu Vicuña stuck to his 4-4-1-1 formation with two changes to the lineup. Our Local lad Prasanth K featured in the role of a winger for the first time this season while Denechandra came in for Jessel. Costa Nhamoinesu wore the captain’s armband to lead the team for the night.

The first half started with our boys showcasing a high press. Our Men in Yellow played as a unit and displayed great teamwork throughout the first half. Our team created back-to-back chances inside the opposition box. To the result of the high pressing football, our team broke the deadlock in the 27th minute via a header from Vicente Gomez. The Spaniard utilized the corner from Sahal and broke the man-marking to slam a header home thereby giving our team the lead.

The second half started with the Islanders scoring the equalizer in the 46th minute from a goal by Bipin Singh. Cy Goddard’s shot takes a deflection off Costa and the ball found Bipin Singh. The player took the opportunity to find the back of the net.

To the dismay of our team, the Islanders were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute of the game. The referee pointed to the spot as Costa brought down Mumbai City FC Striker Adam le Fondre inside the box. The Skipper himself took the penalty to score the goal giving no chance for our keeper through a low powerful shot. Our team couldn’t find a balance in the game thereafter. Although our boys tried hard they couldn’t convert any chances to alter the result before the referee blew the final whistle.

Our Boss Kibu Vicuña reacted about the match result, “I think we played well. We created chances and dominated the best team in the competition at times. All these 50-50 decisions have not been going our way. We just need to keep working harder. In football, when you are in good form, you tend to get a string of good results even if you play bad. But for us, the extra bit of luck is just not there. I feel this season has been very cruel to us. We have to improve in defence. We had very good chances to score that second goal. Any team could have won tonight. But once again, it was us stuck at the wrong end.”
