68′ Roy Krishna

In the opener of the seventh edition of Indian Super League, KBFC hosted ATKMB at GMC Stadium, Bambolim which was also designated as our home ground for this season. The match was held following all the safety protocols set by the league in a closed-door environment. The Men-in-Yellow and the Mariner’s fought hard throughout the 90 minutes of the game. But a sole goal from Roy Krishna on the 68th minute of the game made it a frustrating day for us at the office as ATK Mohun Bagan claimed a 0-1 victory at Bambolim last night.

FIRST HALF – A CAGEY START

Both the teams started off slow and the intensity peaked as the game progressed. Kibu fielded the team in a 4-3-3 formation with Garry Hooper as a single striker and Sergio Cidoncha captaining our side. Meanwhile ATK was in their usual 3-5-2 formation. The game witnessed its first injury substitution in the early 12th minute after a strong tackle for the ball by Prasanth on Michael Soosairaj, unfortunately leading him out of the field of play. The First half of the game ended goalless with the referee blowing the whistle after a 45 +2 minutes of play.

SECOND HALF – GAME INTENSIFIED

The second half of the game started off interestingly as on the 49th minute we came so close to net our first goal of the season however unlucky Sahal missed it inside the box. At the 59th minute, Kibu called in for his first substitution with Seityasen replacing Nongdamba. A goal from the Fijian Roy Krishna on the 68th minute of the game became the decider. Quite unfortunately our Men-in-Yellow couldn’t penetrate the defense to score the equalizer even though the team gave it all till the last minute of the game.KBFC dominated the game in an account of ball possession and passes completed.

COACH’S VERDICT – KIBU VICUNA

On being asked on his approach to the first game of this season, he commented “We prepared for this game the best we could. The plan of the game was very clear. We are happy with the performance of the team. Unfortunately, we lost because we were unlucky in the goal they scored. We had some chances to score but we didn’t convert. So now we have to focus on the next game.”

Kibu’s thoughts on not finding the net despite enjoying majority of the possession throughout the game: “I think we have to play better in the last third. In defense and in the midfield we had the ball but in the final third we didn’t participate too much so we have to try and improve this aspect of the game.”
