Delhi Dynamos 1-3 Kerala Blasters – Match report

A hat-trick from Iain Hume ensured Kerala Blasters secured all three points against Delhi Dynamos

Kerala Blasters won the first away game of the season against Delhi Dynamos in an enthralling contest. The win was also the first under David James in his second stint as manager of Kerala Blasters.

James gave new signing, Keziron Kizito, his first start of the season in place of Mark Sifneos and that was the only change to the team that started against Pune on the 4th.

Courage Pekuson was lively down the left wing for Kerala Blasters in the initial stage and this paid dividend in the 12th minute when his tenacious play opened up space in the box for Iain Hume. Pekuson’s cut back was deflected but it still found its way to Hume and the latter slid the ball in to hand us the lead.

Hume was in the thick of the action throughout and continued to play after a head injury in the first half. However, his striking partner, Dimitar Berbatov, was taken off in the first half with an injury and replaced by Mark Sifneos.

At the stroke of half-time, Delhi equalised through their captain Pritam Kotal from a set-piece situation thus restoring balance and setting up an even more intense second half.

The score remained unaltered for most of the second half but in the 78th minute, Iain Hume latched on to a throw-in from Pekuson and curled one past the goalkeeper brilliantly to restore the lead. Five minutes later, he completed his hat-trick with a sensational chip. This made the Canadian, the first player to score three hat-tricks in the ISL and also the all-time leading goalscorer for Kerala Blasters (8 goals).

The game was also the 50th one for captain Sandesh Jhingan in Kerala Blasters colour and in the ISL, making him the first Indian player to reach that number and only the second player overall in ISL history.

This was also the first time ever that Kerala Blasters played in an away kit and the result and performance were memorable, to say the least.

The result takes the team into 6th place ahead of the away game against Mumbai City FC on the 14th of January.
